Aalia Husain named Mid-Atlantic All American

Congratulations Aalia Husain, Potomac, MD, Potomac School, who was awarded All-American honors by the coaches in MASO high school league. All-American recognition honors those players who have achieved at the highest level of competitive excellence in junior squash. Recipients are selected through two pathways: junior players ranked in the top eight of the boys’ and girls’ U19 division and top four of the boys’ and girls’ U17 division; and players voted on by coaches and league administrators of US Squash-accredited high school leagues. NCS Juniors Win Five of Nine Titles at Mid-Atlantic Championships

National Capital Squash juniors took home four of the five titles in the girls divisions and BU15 to score wins in over half the divisions at the Mid-Atlantic Junior Championships, which were played at Squash on Fire Oct. 21-22.  The tournament was open to juniors from Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. NCS junior girls swept the top two positions in GU19, GU13 and GU11.  Hanna Chaudhry dropped just one game in GU19, to finalist Shalika Neelaveni.  It was Hanna's third regional title. Khadija Elhaddad won GU11, beating Caroline Dupree, who knocked out the #2 seed from Baltimore with a 3-0 win.  GU13s Layah Nasr and Elise Kang swept the top two spots, with each reaching the finals with consecutive 3-0 wins. Cameron Bahadori, Kira Keating and Jeremy Barnes win All-American awards

US Squash began naming All-Americans this season to recognize the top junior players who compete in high school leagues or tournament play.

Cameron Bahadori and Kira Keating were selected as the top players in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Organization, a regional high school varsity league that just completed its fifth season.  Kira finished the season ranked #5 in the nation among all high school girls, while Cameron was ranked #42 among boys.  Jeremy Barnes was selected by the coaches in the Washington Area Squash Association league, a local high school club team league that played its inaugural season as a US Squash sanctioned league.  Jeremy finished the season ranked #102 among high school boys.

11 National Capital Juniors Compete at National Championships

A strong field of National Capital Squash juniors competed at the US Squash National Championships and Silver National Championships. It is an honor to gain entry into either event -- congratulations to all NCS juniors who competed in these championship events!

Kira Keating was the sole NCS junior to compete in the National Championship, open to the top 32 players in the nation. This year's championship was held at Princeton University. Kira won 5 matches in GU19 to win the consolations, good for ninth place. She trounced two players she had never beaten before.  Her only loss was a round of 16 match that had two tie breakers and her opponent went on take to fifth place.

Potomac School Boys and Girls Varsity teams earn top 16 national rankings

The Potomac Girls Varsity team competed in Division 1 of the High School National Championships, the first time a National Capital girls team has ever competed in the nation's most elite division.  At the championships, the Potomac girls got to match ball in an individual match that would have secured at least a top 12 finish, but it slipped away.  Still, the girls finished the season with a national ranking of 16, while the Potomac boys took 15th in the nation.  Both the boys and girls teams were undefeated in league play and both teams also beat the top Baltimore high school teams too. Three NCS Juniors Reach Quarterfinals at Silver Nationals

Three National Capital Squash juniors reached the quarterfinals in the US SQUASH Junior Silver Squash Championships that ended Sunday, April 14. Nghi Nguyen played up an age division and recorded the highest finish, reaching the GU19 semifinals where she lost a tightly contested four game match. Isabel Young, who recently aged out of GU15, had an impressive run, reaching the GU17 quarterfinals in a five game thriller, clinching the final game 15-13! She then narrowly missed reaching the semis, falling in five tough games. Theo Mendez lost a heart breaker of a match in the round of 16, losing 11-9 in the fifth to the eventual semifinalist. Theo then went on to win the consolations in a very strong 32-player BU17 field. Two NCS Juniors Compete at US Junior National Championships

Competing in this event is a major honor for any  junior squash player -- it shows the player has reached the top 32 in his age group in the USA.  Congratulations to Cameron Bahadori and Kira Keating, who qualified in the BU19 and GU19 divisions.

Kira Keating, who recently aged up into the GU19,  finished 13-16th and is currently ranked #12 in the US.  Cameron is the #1 ranked NCS junior boy and #40 in the US.

SquashRevolution SCLA Bronze Results

NCS juniors played well the first weekend this month, taking tournament victories in three out of four divisions, by beating back players from Baltimore, Richmond and Charlottesville.

In BU19, Caden Petersmeyer cruised to victory, dropping just one game, in the final, to record his first tournament win.  Ian Brown played up an age division and took third place. Nilay Neelaveni played up an age division into BU15, and battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the semifinal to win in five, before falling in the final in a match that included two tiebreaker games.  Michael Lovegrove took third. Charlie Thomas won all  three of his matches without dropping a game to clinch his second impressive tournament win this season in BU11.

SquashRevolution DC Bronze Results

NCS players won a number of great victories at this tournament, played in February at the Sports Club/LA in Washington DC.  Unseeded Ryan Lovallo won in BU15 in a deep 12-player field with competitors from five states and DC.  Michael Lovegrove, also unseeded, came back from a 2-1 deficit to beat the #1 seed 13-11 in the fifth.  He then took third place.  Jeremy Barnes played up a division and won BU19 without dropping a game.

Sophia Yazigi win GU15, winning all her matches 3-0 on the way to her first tournament victory.  Anna Wasserman played in her first ever tournament in GU19, and clinched the deciding match in five games to secure the win.
