On Sunday March 30 at the Potomac School courts, a 9-member team of selected National Capital Squash (NCS) women squash players took on their rivals from Baltimore in pursuit of the 2014 Lacy Cup, the annual DC-vs-Baltimore women’s team competition.

The bottom of the Baltimore ladder consisted of four young ladies from Baltimore’s urban squash program, SquashWise. NCS newcomer and #9 player Claire Huschle lost 3-0 to her Baltimore opponent, as did #8 Maureen Wylie. Another NCS newcomer, Elizabeth Holdefer, fought a good battle at the #7 position and ultimately lost 3-1.

The momentum shifted in the middle of the ladder, as Cindy Vojtech playing at the #6 position took her Baltimore opponent in 4 games. NCS #5 Ubu Grace Hoshizaki and #6 Donna Sharpe both swept their Baltimore opponents, 3-0. Potomac School student Isabel Young playing at #3 defeated her Baltimore opponent in four games.

When another Potomac School player Nghi Nguyen lost in a nail-biter five game match to Baltimore’s #2 player, the Cup hinged on the final #1 match between Baltimore’s Casey Wong and Alejandra Porras who plays for the George Washington varsity team. Regrettably, Casey triumphed over Alejandra in 3 games, sealing Baltimore’s victory for 2014.

It was great to see players of all ages and skill levels out on the courts, having a great time. Everyone enjoyed watching the top players’ matches, and many players stayed after the “official” matches were over for an informal round robin.
Baltimore will host in 2015, and NCS hopes to win the Cup next year!
